2018-2019 Coach Bios
Elyse Texido returns to SYAVBC for another great season! Elyse has many years of playing and coaching experience, playing since her middle school years in New York. Elyse was the varsity setter for St. Mary’s High School in Buffalo, NY, and led her team to 3 state championships. She also played for Niagara Frontier Volleyball Club, one of the most successful club programs in the Western Empire Region of USAV. Elyse went on to play for Mercyhurst University in Pennsylvania; her senior year she was named Mercyhurst Athlete of the Year (across all sports) and the PSAC West Defensive Player of the year. Elyse enjoyed her time coaching 15s with Club Chill in Erie, PA and has also coached numerous juniors volleyball camps over the years. In the 2017 season, Elyse led 16 Blue to a second-place finish in CHRVA Club Regionals, bringing home silver medals in the Gold Division, and in 2018, helped 17 Blue achieve the same distinction, finishing the 2018 season ranked #18 out of 61 teams in the CHRVA region! Seven of Coach Elyse’s players from the 2018 season competed in the 2018 VHSL State Tournament! Elyse is IMPACT certified, and this will be her fourth season coaching for SYAVBC.
Corey Gough grew up on the soccer field, playing competitively through high school, and coached a U10 soccer team while he was in college. In his senior year of high school, he began playing volleyball, competing in A and AA tournaments. Corey coached club volleyball for two years prior to joining SYAVBC, and this is his third season with us. In the 2017 season, Corey led 17 Blue to a first-place finish in the CHRVA Club Regionals, bringing home gold medals in the Gold Division, as well as silver medals at Monument City Classic! in 2018, Corey’s 17 Blue team was ranked #18 out of 61 teams in the CHRVA region. Seven of Coach Corey’s players from the 2018 season competed in the 2018 VHSL State Tournament! He has given private coaching lessons for five years. He graduated from UVA with a BS in Electrical Engineering and recently earned his Master’s Degree in Engineering Management. Corey is IMPACT certified, and he is looking forward to another competitive season with SYA Volleyball Club.
Nancy Parks played volleyball all throughout her middle school and high school years in her hometown of Charlotte, NC, and went on to play all 4 years for the women’s club team at Duke University. Nancy has played Middle and Outside Hitter in the adult co-ed and women’s leagues in Fairfax, VA for 10 years, and has passed her love for the sport on to her daughters. Nancy coached volleyball for many years in local rec leagues, and has club coaching experience the 14s level. We’re delighted to welcome her to our coaching staff this season, and she’s looking forward to working with her team to have fun and share the joy of volleyball, while helping every player improve their physical and mental game.
Sammy Hogue was an award-winning high school athlete, playing both volleyball and lacrosse for all 4 years at West Springfield High School, earning All-District honors in both sports. At the University of Mary Washington, Sammy was the starting Setter for the Eagles, and also played on the UMW rugby team, winning a national championship in women’s rugby. She has multiple seasons of club playing and coaching experience here in the CHRVA region. Sammy absolutely loves coaching volleyball, she is looking forward to helping her players be the best they can be, and we are excited to welcome her to SYAVBC!
Ellen Koch returns to SYAVBC for another great season, after having coached in SYA Volleyball’s very popular clinic series for four years. Ellen played four seasons with Christopher Newport University, and student coached CNU for a fifth season. During her time on the CNU roster, Ellen was one of the top two players in kills each season, and was chosen as Honorable Mention for All-USA South in 2005 and 2006, and First Team All-Conference in 2007 and 2008. She was also named Conference Player of the Year in her senior season at CNU. Ellen played for Western Albemarle High School, where she set a school record for kills in a season. Her team won three district regular season titles and two tournament championships. Ellen was team captain, was named Jefferson District Player of the Year, and first team All-Central Virginia and second team All-State as a senior. Ellen coached club volleyball for several years before moving to Northern Virginia, and she is looking forward to her second season with SYAVBC.
Lauren Havill is a former SYAVBC player and an outside/opposite hitter who currently plays for the Northern Virginia Community College Nighthawks. She started playing volleyball in middle school and quickly fell in love with the sport. She attended Battlefield High School, where she played all four years. A regional championship, All-Conference honors, a six-rotation player and Varsity Captain are just a few of her high school accomplishments. In the 2017 Club season, Lauren added numerous medals to her collection with SYAVBC 18 Blue playing for Coach K and Coach Lowery, and she enjoys coaching for the same club that they founded. Lauren brings an emphasis on wellness of body and mind to her coaching style, and although she is a big fan of winning and medals, her goal is to help instill proper fundamentals and passion for the game in her team. This will be Lauren’s second season coaching for SYAVBC.
Jeff Huse has over 30 years of youth coaching experience in volleyball, baseball, and basketball across all ages, and this will be his third season coaching with SYAVBC. Jeff is the Head JV Volleyball Coach at Westfield High School, and has also served as the Assistant Freshman Coach at Westfield. Jeff is a multi-sport athlete with years of playing baseball, basketball, football and track, including for his high school team in Gainesville, Missouri. Jeff also coached SYA Volleyball’s house and middle school travel teams for five years, and he really enjoys mentoring young athletes. Jeff is IMPACT certified, and has received Level 1 – Head Coach Certification from the Art of Coaching Volleyball. Jeff also received the recognition of SYA Outstanding Volunteer in 2015, and is looking forward to a terrific season with SYAVBC.
Stephanie Hagen continues to bring her love of volleyball to coaching for SYAVBC. She is one of two SYAVBC alumni on our coaching staff, having played for SYA Volleyball and SYAVBC from 2006 – 2010. During those years Stephanie played varsity for her middle school and high school teams as well. At Battlefield High School she was the Varsity Captain, and played libero on Coach K and Coach Lowery’s SYAVBC 16 Blue Crush team which won CHRVA Gold Bracket Regionals in 2009. Stephanie is the Head Middle School Girls’ Volleyball Coach at Dominion Christian School in Oakton, Virginia. Stephanie is IMPACT certified, and her philosophy is that physical fitness should be a top priority for her players, and works with her teams to develop the endurance and strength needed to “give it all” for tournaments. This will be Coach Stephanie’s third season coaching for SYAVBC.
