Each season the coaches in the Old Dominion Soccer League (ODSL) vote for a team within their division which exhibits the best sportsmanship. In addition to the coaches votes, sportsmanship points are averaged from each referee report card reflecting the sportsmanship displayed by the coaching staff, parents and players. Also, points are subtracted for yellow and red cards accumulated during the season. The prestigious award is named after Randy Rawls, one of the leagues original founders and its first President. The award recognizes the positive example set by both the parents and coaches, and honors the winner’s sense of fair play, something for which Randy was renowned as he sought to bring soccer opportunities to the youth of Northern Virginia. Randy has since retired to Florida where he authors detective mystery books.
In addition to the honor of being selected for this award by their peers, SYA Arsenal White 95 will receive FREE tickets to see D.C. United play at an MLS regular season match in 2010. Friends and family members will also be able to join them for a special discounted rate. The team also received a trophy and congratulatory medals.
